SJPII and Chesterton Academy Celebrates the Virtues

On September 25, St. John Paul II Classical School and Chesterton Academy held its annual Walk for Virtues, one of our most valued traditions! We were graced with Mass and Adoration celebrated by Fr. Juan Carlos Altamirano, the Parochial Vicar of St. Philip’s Parish. A total of sixteen students served the Mass, Adoration, and Eucharistic Procession, with Freshman Yurem Sanchez-Limon leading as the Master of Ceremonies.

With enthusiasm, students held banners with the symbols of their class’s virtue, passing them along when their arms became wearied, or when they chose to be generous to a classmate. Chesterton music teacher Gary Guevara led the whole procession in song, offering praise to our Lord until we came back to St. Philip’s for Benediction. After Benediction, our students rushed out to St. Philip’s Park for games put on by the Chesterton houses until the end of the day. Each house leads a set of Upper and Lower school classes in games they designed, often participating with the younger students.

The Virtues play a vital role in the school’s classroom instruction and community. While they can be seen as only following another set of rules, they are gifts that allow us to grow with one another and up to God. Holding standards with the names of the Virtues, adoring the Lord in song, and finishing the day with games strengthens the joy that comes with practicing the Virtues. The day marks for St. John Paul II Classical School the forgotten yet fundamental truth that virtue is joyful. As our patron says,
